In the spring of 1966 Rev. Ryce gave way to Rev James L. Cummings, who came to us in the summer of 1966, bringing with him the Dial-A-Prayer. Rev Cummings was very inspiring preacher whose sermons were moving and thought provoking. We are indebted to him for his leadership of the congregation in 'burning the mortgage on the church', acquiring the property for our present parking lot and rebuilding the south wall of the Educational Building. Rev. Cummings has two other distinctions: one of equaling the record for Rev Amos Ryce II for the longest tenure, twelve years, and second, for being elevated to the episcopacy in May of 1978. Rev. Cummings was very active in community affairs. He was elected to the school board. Rev. Cummings was married to Mrs. Norma Jean Cummings and had one daughter, Denise Marie.
Rev. Dr. Isaiah Scipio Jr., was appointed pastor in 1978. Dr. Scipio came to Lane after having served the world church as General Secretary of the Department of Missions and Social Concerns. He was married to Marion C. Wesson Scipio and had two daughters. His wife Marion died in 1985. Pastor Scipio appointed the first Administrative Assistant in the history of this congregation. In addition, he established our prayer garden, the church newsletter and dinners with the pastor.
In 1985, Bishop C.A. Kirkendoll, Presiding Prelate of the Third Episcopal District, appointed The Rev. Othel Ramano Jackson as the 17th pastor of Lane. Rev Jackson is noted as a compassionate humanitarian. He was adamant about visiting the sick members of the congregation. He initiated the first tape ministry, Satellite Sunday School Ministry for Shut-ins, Feed the Hungry Program, installed plexi-glass window coverings to preserve the stained glass windows, installed a new boiler for the offices, purchased a new Hammond Organ and the Celestial Choir was formed. He led us in several innovative programs and fund raisers.
The most prominent were the Moments in Music and the 1989 Church Anniversary Calendar Tea. During his tenure, we purchased a new van, renovated the old educational building, purchased property and built a new parsonage. In 1994 He announced his candidacy for the office of Bishop in the C.M.E Church. Although he was not elected, he presented himself and the Congregation well. Rev. Jackson's devoted wife, Elizabeth Jackson was a lovely First Lady who adopted many of the young adults of Lane as her children.
